I just cleaned all of my earrings and earring backs with:

As long as you rinse the jewelry well you will not have a problem. Next time try using i tsp baking soda 2 drops of dish soap i cup water bring to a boil on the stove let boil 5 minutes take off fire rinse with cold water let jewelry dry you are ready to go.

It is safe. Rinse and wear. It is only a mild cleaning agent sometime with ammonia. Do not do as one has suggested, that is boiling your jewelry. Boiling while safe for gold and diamonds, most other jewelry and gems will be damaged by boiling. You can now buy ultrasonic cleaners for under $80 (see moregems.com). This is the technology that jewelers use.
