As the world economy slows industries are starting to tighten up and downsize to stay in business. But there are still a few out there who are happy with the way things are.
We found one such industry in India’s eastern Kolkata. Let’s take a look.

STORY:
The goldsmiths in Kolkata toil over every ornament they make by hand. And there are no machines in sight here. They are contented with business and glad they stuck with this age-old custom. A few years back most of the budding jewelers had shifted to mass machine made production for the U.S market. But with the collapse of that market these intricately designed and exquisite pieces are in hot demand.

Popular amongst the fashion conscious in the Middle East and India.

[Ketan Doshi, Exporter]:
“The nature of our market is hand made jewelry and the customers whom we cater to have not been affected by the recession yet. That is why I feel that at the moment the jewelers of Kolkata who are into hand made jewelry are able to survive.”

And the gold connoisseurs, they feel the handcrafted jewelry has an edge over the machine made product.

[Neha Bagghi, Customer]:
“We like handmade jewelry. We don’t like machine made jewelry…not at all. Because in machine made jewelry we get lots of the same design at the same time. And with handmade jewelry we get more designs. Whatever we like we can choose the design and it will be made. So that is why we prefer hand made jewelry.”

Last year, total exports from Kolkata were worth over 40 million U.S dollars. And so far this year, that figure is up by six percent.
